On Wednesday, June 9, Ste Jeanne d’Arc School celebrated the achievements of all the students involved in the various athletic programmes in the school. From one basketball team in 1971, the programme has evolved to 19 teams playing nine different sports. In addition, each year, the school recognises one person who has made a significant contribution to the athletic pro-gramme, either as a coach, a resource person or a volunteer in the various activities. This year, the person of the hour was Sr. Jeanne Archambault who was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame of Ste Jeanne d’Arc School.

Sr Jeanne with cheerleaders

In order to encourage the boys on the basketball team in 1975, Sr. Jeanne decided to form the first squad of cheerleaders. Since she could not find a coach for them, she undertook the task herself, teaching them the skills and doing the choreography they needed not only to perform at the games, but also to enter into competition with other squads. In addition to the training, there was also the fund-raising and the sewing of appropriate uniforms in spite of the shortage of money. One of those first cheer-leaders, in honouring Sr. Jeanne, highlighted not only her talent as a teacher, but her gifts as an educator of the whole person, as well as a gift of self which transcends the walls of the school.
Congratulations, Sister Jeanne! This is an honour that is well deserved!
