A HALF-CENTURY WORTH CELEBRATING

How can we find the best way to adequately recognize the contribution of so many persons who, over the course of the past fifty years, have contributed to the mission and the success of D’Youville Senior Care Center?

Sisters in Banquet Hall

This is what was attempted on Saturday, October 30, as over 400 persons gathered at the Conference Center of the University of Massachusetts – Lowell to help us express our gratitude to the Greater-Lowell community for the thousand and one ways in which it supported us in the past half-century.  From the outset, in 1960, had not the congregation received the help and support of certain businessmen, it never could have brought to light the dream it had cherished for some time: serving the aging community of Lowell with compassion.

Naomi, Sr. Gisèle, Sr. Yolande and Jack O'Connor (master of ceremonies) Twelve persons, of whom five were honored posthumously, were acclaimed for their contribution either in the establishment and/or the on-going growth of D’Youville Senior Care.  The list ran the gamut from a bank president to a volunteer whose dedication is boundless.  A lovely painting depicting the various facets of the institution’s history was presented to each one, as well as to the General and Provincial Councils.

The presence of Cardinal Séan O’Malley, archbishop of Boston, as well as our Sisters Yolande Campbell and Gisèle Vadeboncoeur, added a special touch to the festivities.

Sr. Yolande speaking in the name of the CongregationPresentation to NaomiIn the Congregation’s name, they presented a gift to Ms. Naomi Prendergast, President and Chief Executive Officer.  In addition, we recognized the presence of several Oblates of Mary Immaculate whose support over the years we wished to highlight.

Two of our present companions were among the foundresses of D’Youville.  As a sign of appreciation a lovely bouquet was presented to Sr. Cecile Cloutier, who served in nursing. Sr. Therese Martin, who worked in accounting back in 1960, was not present because of recent orthopedic surgery.
