A word from Mother Bruyère
June 2, 1845
I plead with you not to show this letter or rather this contract to anyone. My self-love would be piqued to learn that my letters had made the rounds; I suppose I should have expected it, but I wasn’t thinking they would. If you do not wish to receive any more letters from me, then you only have to show them around, but I have to admit that I would be more punished than you would be, since I am so lonely when I pass several days without writing to you.
