The mural "La compassion au coeur du monde" (Compassion at the heart of the world), created, in three panels, by visual artist Jerry Grey was realized with the support of advisors from from the Sisters of Charity of Ottawa and with the assistance of design consultant Anne Carlyle and silkscreen technician Danny Hussey. The mural celebrates the lives and the work of numerous generations of Sisters from the very foundation of the Congregation up to our times, here in Ottawa and abroad. This wonderful work of art is made up of 50 small paintings or 50 stories, all coming together as one.
A unique dialogue seems to flow from one image to another, expressing one vision, one passion: love for the people of God. Grounded in a daring and humble past, the charism of compassion comes alive in the hands, the eyes, the gestures, the choice of colours. Below each line of images, a quote of Élisabeth Bruyère emphasizes her rich legacy and connects the past to the present. The painting of a stunning young Elisabeth Bruyère is located front and centre in the mural, enhancing each little story. In contemplating this work of art, one senses the heartbeat of Elisabeth and of the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Ottawa.
