Our Archives

History

The Archives of the Sisters of Charity of Ottawa are part of a category known as Religious Historical Archives. They are located in the Mother House of a Congregation that has existed for 163 years. They contain more than 250 linear meters of documents related to its history, to its more than 3600 members living and dead, and to its 255 houses dispersed in 4 Countries in Africa : Lesotho, Cameroon, Malawi, Zambia; Brazil, Canada, the United States, Japan, Thailand, Haiti and Papua New Guinea.

The Archives also contain a specialized library of about 6000 volumes, audio-visual documents, plans and thousands of photographs.

Its personnel consists in a director, a head archivist and four aides.

Mandate

The mandate entrusted to the Archives of the Sisters of Charity of Ottawa is to ensure the permanent conservation and diffusion of the archival documents which tell the story of the Congregation.

Copyrights must be respected
Control for publications: The archivist can rightly demand that the researcher submit the official text prior to publication.
The Congregation remains, at all times, the rightful owner of the documents and retains the copyright.
Specific research:

The archivist can respond by telephone or by e-mail to requests of a general nature requiring brief research.

If the request requires extensive research, special arrangements must be made in writing, justifying the research and specifying its scope as precisely as possible.
