Bytown when the Sisters arrived – 1845

The Sisters leave Montreal, February 19 1845

Bytown, a small town of ill-repute, had existed for less than twenty years when the Grey Nuns arrived in 1845.  The Sisters came at the request of Most Rev. Patrick Phelan, Bishop of Kingston, in order to open a school and a hospital and care for the needy and the orphans.
